Weight Loss - It's in Your Head

Weight Loss - It's in Your Head
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Helene_Haber]Helene Haber

When you truly consider the weight-loss process, the battle waged is mostly in your mind. “Should I eat the corn muffin with butter or would it be better for me to have margarine or better yet, have jelly? What am I doing eating this muffin anyway? It’s so caloric and filled with saturated fat. I’m such a pig. I have absolutely zero willpower.” It’s no wonder you’ll eat that muffin with the butter and slather jelly on top to quiet that negative self-talk.

What you need more than a diet is a way to shift those negative self-defeating thoughts to more adaptive, positive self-statements. As with most things worth doing, this requires a bit of practice. First, become aware when you’re using a negative statement, then determine what about that thought is faulty and finally, replace it with a self-defense response or coping thought.
In the corn muffin example, instead of listening to “I’m such a pig” which clearly mislabels who you are, respond with “Pigs are animals and I am human. I don’t have to be perfect.”

Many people cannot change their eating habits until they change their thoughts about food, eating and drinking. By shedding “distorted” thoughts and replacing them with productive ones, eating habits can be changed. It is possible to rid yourself from many self-critical thoughts, but like any ingrained habit, it takes vigor and vigilance to change. Here are some other thinking distortions to challenge:

Shoulds. Should statements are more about other people’s values, not ones chosen by the person who wants to lose weight. Additionally, should statements reflect an attempt by the dieter to motivate herself without really believing in the value. Better to determine what works for you. “I will eat up to two Hershey kisses daily and thoroughly enjoy them.”

All-or-Nothing. This kind of reasoning is the foundation for perfectionism. An all-or-nothing individual views the world as black or white. Since there is no allowance for gray areas, the behavior is either perfect or a failure. “I’ve ruined my diet by eating all that pizza. I can’t stay on a diet and I’ll just always be fat.” Maybe the problem does not arise from the behavior… maybe the problem is with the diet that does not allow for pizza. “I do not want to give pizza up for the rest of my life, so what I need is a way to include pizza in my diet without feeling like a failure. Let me try having a salad (dressing on the side) before the pizza to take the edge off my hunger.”

Good Foods/ Bad Foods. If the truth be told, foods do not misbehave. Foods are not good or bad. While it is true that some foods have more nutrients or are more fiber-dense than others, all foods can be enjoyed. How we think about food colors what we eat and how much we eat. If a food is labeled as bad (such as fries), then for many individuals that food is taboo. When one eventually succumbs to eating the forbidden, French fries, bingeing may result. Rather than continue with dichotomous thinking of good food/bad food, shift to allow space for all foods you like without judgement. Instead of “I ate those fries which are so bad for me” to “I really enjoyed that small portion of fries. They really satisfied me.”

Body Distortions. Rather than dwelling on how fat or thin you think your body is, it is extremely helpful to view your body in terms of what it can do for you. For example, when you look in the mirror, instead of zooming in on your stomach which “looks five months pregnant, although your last baby was nine years ago” tell yourself “my body has given life” or “my body enables me to go where I want to and allows me to have fun.”

The conversations that are going on inside your head cannot be stopped. However, what you can do is to be aware of negative self-talk and understand that it has little to do with actual reality. When you believe this, you can respond to the critical voice with a more objective, coping thought. Although negative thoughts may not be stopped entirely, they can be quieted by listening to your compassionate, caring voice. In much the same way you would sympathize and listen to a close friend, listen to yourself. Be your own best friend and chances are you’ll have greater weight loss success.

Jump Off the Weight Loss Plateau

Jump Off the Weight Loss Plateau
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Kim_Beardsmore]Kim Beardsmore

Dieters dread the plateau. You're on a roll, losing weight steadily and happily for weeks. Your confidence is high and your goal is in sight. Then suddenly your scale freezes. No matter how hard you try, those extra pounds just refuse to budge. You've hit a wall and you know the frustration of seeing no progress could easily lead you to gain back what you've lost. So how do you break through the plateau?

It's perfectly normal for a dieter to reach a plateau. The trick is to use it as an opportunity to double up your efforts and get really clear on your strategy to carry you through to the finish line. Below you'll find suggestions that can help you recommit to your program and re-ignite the weight-loss process when you feel challenged.

1. Get clear on your ultimate weight-loss goal.

Be sure that your weight-loss goal is realistic and that your expected rate of weight loss is reasonable. If you are on a heath enhancing, nutritionally rich weight loss program you can expect to loss one to two pounds a week. Each body has its own ideal weight and size. Don't compare yourself to anyone else, but listen to your body and notice what feels best for you. A simple way to approximate your ideal weight is by referring to a Body Mass Index chart.

2. Go high-protein, low carbs.

Unless you are eating enough protein to maintain your lean muscle mass, you are likely to have lost weight already from both your fat stores and muscle. Women need to eat approximately 100grams of protein a day and men 150 grams in order to preserve their muscle tissue during a weight loss program. If you have lost some muscle during your weight loss program so far you will need to focus on protein so your body can build muscle, which requires more calories to sustain, which will in turn, kick start your weight loss again. Needless to say, any weight loss program you choose should be one that preserves your body's muscle and this does not happen!

3. Add resistance training to your program.

A wonderful way to boost your metabolism and break through to the next level of weight loss is by incorporating aerobic exercise into your program, such as 30 minutes of walking three to four times a week. (If you are 35 years or older, or haven't exercised regularly, begin with 10 to 15 minutes two to three times a week.) In addition, weight training with free weights or machines several times a week can help increase muscle mass, which in turn allows you to burn more calories faster. Studies show that weight training can increase your metabolism overnight by five to 10 percent. Working out can increase your metabolism for up to 21 hours after an intense workout.

4. Look out for hidden carbohydrates.

If your weight loss progress seems slow, look out for carbohydrates that might be sneaking their way unnoticed into your diet. Sugar can lurk in the most unexpected places such as ketchup, salad dressings, teriyaki and barbecue sauces. Watch out too for cornstarch, sugar or milk solids in many processed foods such as gravies, or sauces on frozen vegetables. Be especially careful about "low-fat" foods where flavor is enhanced by sugar and other carbohydrates. Try keeping a diet journal for a couple of days of EVERYTHING you eat and drink. You may quickly discover the hidden carbs that are keeping your weight-loss progress stuck and be able to eliminate them and move past your plateau.

5. Take the "refinement" out of your diet.

Try eliminating all refined sugar and refined grains from your diet. This includes white bread, pastries, pasta, white rice, white flour crackers, sugar-coated breakfast cereals, cookies and cake. This simple step can encourage a huge weight-loss breakthrough and leave you feeling more healthy and energized in the process.

6. Don't go hungry.

Cutting back on how often you eat can have a negative impact on your diet plateau. Many studies show that small, frequent meals are more satisfying and produce better weight-loss results than the same number of calories consumed in three large meals. Take advantage of healthy snacking and crunch on fresh slices of raw vegetables like celery, peppers, cucumber and jicama when you're hungry.

7. Drink to burn up.

It's vitally important to replenish your fluids by drinking plenty of water on your weight loss program. An inadequate supply of water in itself can slow down your weight-loss. Carry water with you wherever you go throughout the day. For additional weight-management benefits, add a high quality aloe concentrate to your water to help keep your digestion in top shape. Also, a probiotic supplement can help us maintain a healthy intestinal flora. Keeping well hydrated not only helps you burn fat efficiently, it also helps control hunger.

8. Keep your incentive strong.

Remember the determination you felt when you first began your weight-loss program? Remember the excitement of watching the pounds drop one by one? Go back to whatever your initial motivation was and see whether it still works for you. It may have been the desire to lose weight for a particular event or to regain your figure after pregnancy. You may have been motivated by poor health or by the shock of just how much weight you had gained. See whether the same motivation still has juice for you. If not, choose a new one. Keep a picture of yourself looking great (or bad!) on your refrigerator as a daily reminder of where you are heading.

No Fuss Weight-Loss

No Fuss Weight-Loss
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Sheri_Graber]Sheri Graber

To lose weight and keep it off you need an easy to follow
no fuss plan. You need a plan that is simple and sensible.
You need a plan that you can use everyday to get slim and
healthy.

You need a plan that builds on your success day-by-day.
A plan that keeps you inspired and motivated by seeing
results—fast! If you don’t see and feel results fast it’s
far to easy to be tempted by the next fast food drive
through or the next vending machine. Far to easy.

You need a plan that works for you, a plan that blends in
to your lifestyle. A plan that you can live with. Forever.
That’s the real secret to permanent weight-loss.

Most people go on train wreck diets. They follow the
latest fads. They start the diet, lose some weight, then go
off of it and gain all the weight back. Sometimes even
more. That’s called yo-yo- dieting--up and down and back
up. You don’t want to do that, it’s bad for your health.

Permanent weight loss requires changes in your lifestyle.
Changes in your behaviors. You can’t expect to lose
weight by doing the same things like overeating and not
exercising.

You can’t expect to lose weight and keep it off by ignoring
good nutrition and eating foods that are bad for you. Junk
food leads to a junked body. Diabetes, heart disease, high
blood pressure, cancer, stroke and arthritis are just a few of
the health problems associated with obesity.

When I say “junk food” I don’t mean just fast food, donuts,
or candy, I mean all the foods that don’t seem so bad but
are full of sugar, starches and fats. Foods like fruit juice are
full of sugar. You’re better off to eat the fruit and drink
some water. Foods like pasta, rice and french fries are full
of empty calories and cause an insulin response that puts
your body into fat storage mode.

Permanent weight loss requires you to be informed about
what foods have good nutritional value and what ones don’t.
You don’t need to take a college nutrition course but you
do need to know some basic “nutrition 101” principles.

To be successful with your weight loss and management
you need to know the difference between proteins, fats and
carbohydrates. You need to know how much protein you
should be eating, how much carbohydrates and what kinds
of fats.

You need to know the effects of sugar on your body.
Most mothers think they’re doing a good thing by
giving their children apple juice instead of soda.

Being confused and uniformed leads to weight problems.
Weight problems for yourself and maybe even your family.
Young children have no control over the foods they eat.
Food is either fed to them or placed before them when
They’re old enough to eat. Sure they can refuse to eat,
but it’s usually not the cookies and cakes but the carrots
and broccoli.

Children can be taught early on to eat healthy or to eat
unhealthy. If parents recognized this fact and were aware
of the habits they were passing on through modeling
lifestyle behaviors the obesity epidemic could probably
be reversed in a few years. And I’m sure the rates of
drinking and smoking in young people would go down
as well.

I can hear some well meaning mothers or grandparents
saying, “well they have to have some treats some of the
times”. Maybe on an occasional birthday. But when
the children are older and as people become more
educated about the causes of obesity there’s going to be
some serious finger pointing.

Remember when the Marlboro Man was cool? Remember
when everyone smoked, even pregnant women? Things
have changed haven’t they? The social stigma attached to
smoking will be dwarfed by the stigma that is becoming
attached to obesity. And the difference between smoking
and obesity is you can’t hide the fact that you’re fat.

What about portion control? We’ve become a super-sized
nation because of super-sized portions. When it comes to
restaurants we rate them good or bad according to how
much food is on the plate.

At home, people are too busy these days to weigh, measure
and count food units. You need simple ways to eyeball
serving sizes for portion control.

A simple, easy to follow, no fuss plan is the answer to
your weight problem. Why complicate things and cause
yourself more stress?

Eliminate Sugar and Lose Weight

Eliminate Sugar and Lose Weight
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Marilyn_Jerome]Marilyn Jerome

If you want to lose weight, there is one thing you ought to eliminate from your diet…sugar.

Sugar is a villain in your quest to lose weight. You are probably thinking, “Of course, everyone knows that sugar is fattening.” Well, there’s more to it than meets the eye. It’s important that you understand exactly why you ought to avoid sugar.

First, let’s define sugar. Sugar takes many more forms than the white table sugar with which you are familiar. Sugar includes corn syrup, maltose, lactose, fructose, sucrose, brown sugar, honey, molasses.

When you ingest cakes, cookies, chocolate, cereal, etc.—in other words, simple carbohydrates—you flood your bloodstream with sugar. (You need to begin to read ingredients labeling to determine if there is sugar in the food. You’ll be surprised at just how many foods contain sugar in one form or another.) The pancreas then produces insulin, a hormone designed to pull sugar out of your bloodstream and deposit it in your cells and your liver.

Because the pancreas does such a good job, your blood sugar rapidly drops lower than it should. (That explains your swings in your energy level.) Your brain then gets the message that your body requires more sugar to return the level to normal. As a result you feel a need to eat more sugar. And the cycle begins again.

Many people believe they are “addicted” to sugar. I guarantee you that, if you didn’t eat sugar for three or four days, that feeling of “addiction” would pass because your blood sugar levels would be stable and you would no longer feel the craving for sugar.

In addition, the pancreas releases another hormone called glucagon that helps to release fat from your cells. When you eat sugar all the time and the pancreas has to constantly release insulin, it is prohibited from releasing glucagon. As a result, you are literally locking fat in your body.

You might ask, “What about fruit?” Many people think of fruit as a great diet food. How often do you see someone having a plateful of fruit for lunch? Remember that fruit contains fructose, a natural sugar responsible for the sweetness of the fruit. It’s important to know that just because it’s natural, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s alright to eat it. It works the same way as any sugar. Now, we know that fruit contains many vitamins and minerals and should be a part of your food plan. However, if you are trying to lose weight, you need to keep your fruit consumption low, focusing on those fruits that contain less sugar, such as apples, pears and most berries.

Now, I don’t want to leave you thinking that you can never again have sugar. Even while you are losing weight, there is one time that, if you must, you can give yourself permission to eat sugar. That time is immediately following an INTENSE training session. But be sure the session is intense because working hard will deplete your body of its glycogen stores (that’s the name for sugar stored in your cells and liver for energy). Your body can store only a small amount at a time so it is possible to deplete it during an intense workout.

But don’t overdo it. Remember, while you are in a weight-loss mode, you need to be particularly careful with what you put in your body.

Diet and Weightloss -- Start Your New Year Off Right!

Diet and Weightloss -- Start Your New Year Off Right!
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Shelley_Hitz]Shelley Hitz

FINDING THE PERFECT DIET

Arriving at the Perfect Diet is no quick, simple task in today’s world of fast-paced living. For example, there are several different educational food pyramid plans. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has a food guide pyramid. And the Mayo Clinic, in conjunction with the May Foundation for Medical Education and Research, has their Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid. (Lists of pyramids are updated regularly at the USDA site: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/Fpyr/pyramid.html .)

Then there are the lifestyle choices to go along with the dietary plans. Lives need to be balanced in order to make the perfect diet effective. For example, depending upon the body type, history, physical and mental make up and other factors, some dietary solutions are more perfectly suitable and / or adaptable than others when working in accordance with day-to-day activities; exercise, nutrition, health, etc.

BASIC WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

The perfect diet should be combined with a healthy weight management or activity program. Weight management may conjure up that dreaded “exercise” word. And exercise to some means pushing the body beyond limits, experiencing painful in joints, muscles, and bones – everywhere. No pain no gain, right? Wrong. Instead, replace the word “exercise” with “activity” and incorporate this in your daily routine. And a general rule of thumb for guidelines about “activity” would be to strive for a minimum of 30 minutes for adults or 60 minutes for children of moderate physical activity daily.

Individual activity goals depend upon each person’s health and weight goals and issues. Begin by checking with your medical advisor or healthcare physician to get a green light on which activities would be suitable for you, what your target weight range should be and a strategic plan to improve your health.

In a nutshell, during activities, calories are burned, pounds are shed in the long run. And the number of calories burned depends upon the duration and intensity or the activity. Slow and steady is the rule of thumb. And note daily progress. For those who have never been very active at all, it may be advisable to begin slowly like with walking 10 minutes each day, gradually building up time and distance with increased “brisk” pacing. Even if you can’t get out walking, biking or swimming, take stairs instead of elevators and escalators. Clean your house. Clean your car. Wash windows. Wash your dog. Check out exercise videos, cassettes and workout books from the public library and put some of their ideas into action. Check out your local fitness centers, YMCA, community center, too, for ideas. Partner up with a neighbor to walk or join a community volleyball team. There are unlimited ways to be active and enjoy life at the same time without using painful weight loss strategies.

Diet Tactics You Must Know To Lose Fat...

Diet Tactics You Must Know To Lose Fat...
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Chris_Guerriero]Chris Guerriero

This article is about making long-term changes in the foods you choose and eat, WITHOUT sacrificing good taste.

Let's take a look at protein. Did you know the large majority of your body is protein? That's right. If all the water were removed from your body, 80% of what remained would be comprised of protein. Your hair and nails have protein in them, as do your brain, bones, heart, kidneys, even your skin. You must derive the adequate amount of protein from your diet or you will suffer from lowered energy, weakened immune response, high cholesterol, hormonal imbalances, liver toxicity, premature aging…The list goes on and on.

When there is not enough protein in your diet, your body actually uses protein from its own tissues, breaking down your hard-earned muscles, organs, ligaments, tendons, etc. This is catastrophic to anyone working hard to get more fit because muscle is needed to burn calories, make us strong, shapely and energetic. When you lose muscle, you loose the ability to burn calories, and dramatically slow down your metabolism, wrecking even the best diet efforts!

Now, what about fats? Contrary to belief, fats are not the enemy of dieters. In fact, although fat has twice as many calories as other some other food types, fat does not stimulate significant production of insulin, which is the body's fat-making hormone, which is a major benefit when used in conjunction with a proper
diet like that described in the book Maximize Your Metabolism. Get more information now about this incredible book at: http://www.maximizeyourmetabolism.com/?ezine

Your body needs some fat. Eating fat-free foods is not the answer. Most fat-free food is laden with sugar or harmful chemicals.

Furthermore, unsaturated fats are essential for human survival. Fat helps the nervous system function. Fat holds the organs of the body in correct places. Fat insulates the body. Fat is performs a wide array of vital body functions.

There are many different sources of fat in the diet, making it nearly impossible to avoid fat, as at least a small amount is in nearly all foods. Foods such as oil, nuts, full fat cheeses, avocados, olives, certain cuts of meats, are considered high in fat. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, most grains, potatoes, and
others are very low in fat.

There are different types of fats, too. There are good fats and bad fats. Good fats, or unsaturated fats, are beneficial to the body in a number of ways, and should be implemented into your daily diet (but don't go crazy here - I'm talking about only 2 - 3 tablespoons per day). These good fats are found in such foods as olives, avocados, extra-virgin olive oil, safflower oil, flax oil, nuts, etc. Bad fats, or saturated fats, are the kinds of fats that clog the arteries, make cholesterol levels rise, and raise blood pressure. Bad fats are found in meats, cheeses, butter, lard, and cream. Stay away from ALL saturated fats!

Now, for carbohydrates. Carbohydrate balance is critical to achieving weight loss. Carbohydrates should never be called carbohydrates. They are, in fact, SUGAR! No matter how complex, carbohydrates are broken down to their lowest common denominator, which is glucose. Glucose is sugar.

Regardless, carbohydrates are your body's primary fuel source. Your brain requires carbohydrates every second of its life.

Carbohydrates, in the form of blood sugar, are pumping through your veins every minute of the day. And while they are essential to your survival, they can be your worst enemy.

Carbohydrates in the diet can be found in many places, including fruit, flour, bread, yams, potatoes, rice, pasta, oatmeal, beans, etc.

There are different types of carbohydrates, including simple, medium and complex carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are very easy for the body to break down and absorb, because their chemical structure is simple. But that does not make them good for you – in fact the simple carbohydrates are the worst kind to eat.

Medium-chain carbohydrates are slightly more detailed in their structure, and will take longer for the body to digest and absorb, leading to a longer-lasting release of energy. Complex carbohydrates take the longest to break down and to be utilized by the body, resulting in a longer-lasting release of energy.

Carbohydrates second only to fat in being the most fattening of all the food types because they have the highest potential to cause imbalances in the body's sugar levels and the body's hormones, stopping fat loss cold in it's tracts! This is why regulation of carbohydrates, and eating the right carbohydrates, is essential to
getting healthy, and to losing any unwanted body fat.

Picking protein, fats and carbohydrates for weight-loss. In short, to see the quickest, most dramatic fat-loss results, you will need to add more protein to your diet, eat a few tablespoons of the right fats, and eliminate all of the wrong fats, as well as all white-flour carbohydrates and sugars from your diet.

While this sounds like a challenge, you will quickly find it is not. And, by making these easy, highly-beneficial changes, you will see dramatic results quickly, looking and feeling better within the first week. To help you plan your diet, refer to the lists below:

Protein

• Egg whites

• Chicken breast, turkey breast (without skin)

• Beef

• Soy Protein

• Fish
